Construction crews continue with old UP track excavation and grading between Hazel and Aerojet exits in preparation for the Folsom Light Rail Extension. Light rail crews recently started work on a new rock wall between Natoma Station and Blue Ravine. This "Rockery Wall" will serve
as a retaining wall once completed.
The new Alder Creek light rail bridge also features the granite foundation (under the bridge) used for the original Sacramento Valley Rail Road bridge which was built almost 150 years ago. RT and City of Folsom worked together to make sure this foundation was preserved and incorporated
into the design of the new light rail bridge.

Traffic relievers and tunnels

The public will get a chance to weigh in on what Sacramento County does with its main transportation corridors on Wednesday at an open house at the Tsakopoulos Library Galleria in Downtown Sacramento. Public comments will be taken between 4:30 and 7 p.m.

A six-mile tunnel between US 50 and I 80, under the American River, is one idea that is on the drawing board, although Supervisor Muriel Johnson told the Sacramento Bee that the tunnel idea is one of "the farthest-out" of alternatives being proposed.

The corridors being studied include Watt Avenue, Greenback Lane, Hazel Avenue, Madison Avenue, Sunrise Boulevard, Howe Avenue, Florin Road and El Grove-Florin Road.

The overall effort is called "Mobility Strategies for County Corridors." It's goal is to find ways to avoid gridlock in the coming years in key county corridors. The best ideas will go to the Board of Supervisors this fall.

Power at the Gas Pump

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is urging Californians to "Flex Your Power at the Pump."

Experts say that consumers can reduce fuel costs 15 percent by keeping vehicles in good condition, properly inflating tires and using air conditioning sparingly.

"If we had lower demand, we wouldn't have to import so much oil and gas," said Roland Hwang, a senior analyst at the National Resources Defense Council and author of a report on fuel dependence.

California faces a growing imbalance in the amount of gasoline it uses compared to what it produces. No new oil refinery has been built in the state in more than 30 years. The state's gasoline consumption has spiked along with population growth and the rise of SUVs.

"Flex Your Power at The Pump" was the brainchild of California EPA Secretary Terry Tamminen. Tamminen said if Californians conserve fuel as effectively as they have reduced water and electricity usage in past years, both demand and prices would drop.
